With 2022 in full swing, you may be behind on your New Year’s Resolutions and wondering what goals you can set that will create positive change in the year to come. It’s been a challenging few years for many but, with the right mindset, we can make 2022 more positive. If you are still looking for a New Year’s Resolution, we offer some suggestions.

What is a New Year Resolution?

A New Year’s Resolution is a goal or challenge you set yourself at the beginning of the year, often starting as the clock hits midnight on New Year’s Eve. It might be something you want to achieve in the year, it might be stopping a habit you want to leave behind or it might be more unique to your personal circumstances. A New Year’s Resolution should be a simple goal that will push you further towards being your best self in the upcoming year.

What are the best New Year Resolution ideas for 2022?

Start a journal

Especially for those in the later years of their life, there will be children and grandchildren (maybe even great-grandchildren) who adore you and want to hear your wisdom and stories. Starting a journal which you’ll one day pass on filled with memories and anecdotes can be a great way to spend your time, documenting your life for younger generations to read and letting you relive the best moments of your life. For those who love writing, you could even try to write a full autobiography, but, if you want a smaller challenge, why not just try to write down everything you can remember about key moments in your life like your wedding day, the day your children were born and travel stories?

Thinking of writing your memoirs, Story Terrace have this advice: “Writing your memoirs can seem like a huge task — one that might be overwhelming at times. Rather than try to tackle it all at once, it helps to chip away at it a little at a time. Try to set aside some time for writing each day, and pretty soon crafting a completed manuscript will start to seem like a much more attainable goal.

“If you write just 100 words a day every day for a year, by the end you’ll have a manuscript that’s the same length as a 100-page book. Not bad for just a few minutes spent writing each day!”

Focus on your health

Our personal health is something we should take seriously, and a popular New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight. However, we think a stronger resolution is simply to focus on your health, it might be that you want to shed a few kilos, or you might want to work on staying healthy in other ways, maybe by drinking more water or eating more fruits. If you can determine where you want to be by the end of the year health-wise, you can work out what the right resolution is for you.

Parade Magazine offers this advice: “Instead of obsessing over the scale, obsess over how amazing you feel since you started being more active. Numbers don’t mean much.”

Spend more time with loved ones

Due to the pandemic, it’s been harder than ever to spend time with loved ones over the past few years. So, in 2022 why not try and prioritise seeing them face-to-face? Whether it’s family or friends you want to spend your time with, it’s the perfect time to try and make plans to see one another and catch up. In the social media age we live in, it can be easy to feel as though you’re up-to-date with people’s lives without having to see them but the mental health benefits of real-life interactions cannot be duplicated through a screen and it can be rewarding to make time for others in your day-to-day life.

Improve your home

Our homes should be our palaces, places where we feel safe and comfortable but for many, this isn’t the case. For those in their forever home, taking the time out in 2022 to improve the space can be extremely rewarding and is a hobby you don’t need to leave the house for. What’s more, you might even find yourself starting a new hobby, from woodworking to decorating, as you go. If your home doesn’t work for you, try and find ways to fix problems. For example, if you are struggling with mobility then an automatic stair lift can help you zip between floors easily and independently and help with reducing stress in the long term.

Start a bucket list

There are so many amazing experiences in the world, and it can be hard to keep track of all of the things you’d like to try and see so, why not start a bucket list in 2022? This doesn’t just need to be visiting far-flung destinations, it could be a list broken down into sections: can be done at home, can be done locally, can be done globally. This way, whether you are looking for ideas for a week away or need something to do on a rainy day you’ll have something to try. From cooking a recipe you’ve always wanted to try to see a wonder of the world, the things you could add are endless.

Mollie from We Are Global Travellers loves to mark her dreams down at the beginning of the year, she says: “People very often ask me how I stay motivated, how I figure out what I want and how I go out there and get it. Let me tell you, it’s not by chance or by fate that the dreams I have come to fruition and it’s not without hard work. I truly believe the key to moving towards my dreams with such a force is in the frequent goal setting I’m committed to.”
