Handicare Meets Hollywood

February 4, 2019

We’re Speechless about Handicare’s Ceiling Lift, Independent Lifter and Freecurve stairlift being featured on the hit TV show Speechless. Speechless airs Friday nights on ABC at 8:30 EST and 7:30pm CST.

The show is by “Friends” producer Scott Silveri and follows a family of five: Maya DiMeo (Minnie Driver), her husband Jimmy (John Ross Bowier), and their three kids – Ray (Mason Cook), Dylan (Kyla Kennedy) and JJ (Micah Fowler). Maya is a fierce mother who will do anything on behalf of her family, including her eldest son JJ, a teen with non-verbal cerebral palsy. In reality, Micah Fowler, the actor that portrays JJ, has cerebral palsy, but is able to communicate verbally.

The show has achieved the unique ability to entertain while providing insights into how a family handles the physical, mental and emotional challenges experienced when one member of the family has a disability. There are hardships and complications, but also fun and joy. All is explored and handled by a family whose members are not perfect – they’re flawed, they’re real.

Speechless does not fall into the trap of portraying JJ as superficially inspiring or one to be pitied. Rather, JJ resonates as a complex and humorous individual with a full range of human experiences, emotions and qualities, including being a jerk on occasion. The character provides a genuine glimpse into real life, which many families find empowering.

The creators are guided by advisors to ensure real life necessities be included in the story. The episode aired on February 1st and includes a Handicare Ceiling Lift and Independent Lifter in a scene which explores the challenges of JJ attending college. Another scene takes place at a homecare convention; in the background is our Handicare booth showcasing the Freecurve stairlift.

We are extremely honored to have been asked to provide real-life equipment and staging for Speechless. We appreciate their attention to detail and dedication to include items used in the real world to provide individuals with accessibility, mobility and safety.

At Handicare, our mission is to make everyday life easier for people with mobility challenges and those that care for them. Thank you to the creators of Speechless for bringing this amazing show to life!
